we're back!

It's been a great little vacation from the

world of blogging

(not planned,

but sounds better than my whole list of excuses)

I'm not even going to begin to retrace our steps,

but merely

make mention of a few of our

noteworthy adventures.

Disneyland.

Since our passes expired on

we just had to go

one

last time.

(at least until we get the urge to go again!)

Preschool.

I finally signed Clark up.

It's just 2 days a week.

After some pushing and shoving,

He goes.

But so far so good...

So glad we went.

right next door.

Turns out (surprise, surprise)

So much for posting daily...

which is actually a perfect lead into my last and final post for the week.

So as I look back to this week

my first thought is

"could I have done more?"

Heck yeah.

And could I beat myself up about it?

Oh yes.

(hence all the black eyes)

But my wise and wonderful friend Rachel made a good point

in a previous post:

There are times in my life where I have thought I could do more, but then I remember if I am

giving my all, then that is all that is required of me!

Exactly my point.

I am extremely grateful that I'm in a point in my life

where I am able to serve.

But it is sometimes challenging

and a bit of a juggling act

having little ones while trying to lend a hand.

But I believe
the Lord will recognize our situations

and know our true hearts' desires.

Good thing "the Lord looketh on the heart"
and not our outward appearance.

So stop beating yourself up!

Well let me tell you.

It didn't start out so swell.

I tried to get Andy to let me go to the DMV for him.

(He despises that place,

can't really say that I blame him)

But he insisted that he go,

mostly on account of a previous conversation

that I insisted on him going.

Darn.

Didn't anticipate that one.

Instead of detailing all my heroic good deeds for the day

I thought I should share a bit of insight.

Service is a funny thing.

You can't really brag about the do goodin'

cause where does that get ya?

Why?

I was asked to give a talk in church

about serving others in my daily interactions.

I thought I would blog about my experience

then read the excerpts from the posts.
There, and that's my talk.

Wish me luck.

So to kick things off I thought I would share a quote about...

SERVICE!

Perhaps this will motivate one-and-all

to join me in this little journey.

Come along.

This quote is taken from a talk called
Finding Joy Through Loving Service
by Elder M. Russell Ballard

"I believe there is one simple but profound—even sublime—principle that encompasses the entirety of the gospel of Jesus Christ. If we wholeheartedly embrace this principle and make it the focus of our lives, it will purify and sanctify us so we can live once again in the presence of God.

The Savior spoke of this principle when He answered the Pharisee who asked, “Master, which is the great commandment in the law?

“Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

“This is the first and great commandment.

“And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself” (Matthew 22:36–40).

It is only when we love God and Christ with all of our hearts, souls, and minds that we are able to share this love with our neighbors through acts of kindness and service—the way that the Savior would love and serve all of us if He were among us today.

The love the Savior described is an active love. It is not manifested through large and heroic deeds but rather through simple acts of kindness and service."

I was reminded today of a talk given in the most recent Relief Society General Meeting.

It was given by Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf entitled:

Forget Me Not

A while ago I was walking through a beautiful garden with my wife and daughter. I marveled at the glory and beauty of God’s creation. And then I noticed, among all the glorious blooms, the tiniest flower. I knew the name of this flower because since I was a child I have had a tender connection to it. The flower is called forget-me-not.

He then gave 5 things we should be wise not to forget. The most helpful for me was the third.

Third, forget not to be happy now.

In the beloved children’s story Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the mysterious candy maker Willy Wonka hides a golden ticket in five of his candy bars and announces that whoever finds one of the tickets wins a tour of his factory and a lifetime supply of chocolate.

Written on each golden ticket is this message: “Greetings to you, the lucky finder of this Golden Ticket … ! Tremendous things are in store for you! Many wonderful surprises await you! … Mystic and marvelous surprises … will … delight, … astonish, and perplex you.”³

In this classic children’s story, people all over the world desperately yearn to find a golden ticket. Some feel that their entire future happiness depends on whether or not a golden ticket falls into their hands. In their anxiousness, people begin to forget the simple joy they used to find in a candy bar. The candy bar itself becomes an utter disappointment if it does not contain a golden ticket.

So many people today are waiting for their own golden ticket—the ticket that they believe holds the key to the happiness they have always dreamed about. For some, the golden ticket may be a perfect marriage; for others, a magazine-cover home or perhaps freedom from stress or worry.

There is nothing wrong with righteous yearnings—we hope and seek after things that are “virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy.”⁴ The problem comes when we put our happiness on hold as we wait for some future event—our golden ticket—to appear.

One woman wanted more than anything else to marry a righteous priesthood holder in the temple and be a mother and a wife. She had dreamed about this all her life, and oh, what a wonderful mother and loving wife she would be. Her home would be filled with loving-kindness. Never a bitter word would be spoken. The food would never burn. And her children, instead of hanging out with their friends, would prefer to spend their evenings and weekends with Mom and Dad.

This was her golden ticket. It was the one thing upon which she felt her whole existence depended. It was the one thing in all the world for which she most desperately yearned.

But it never happened. And, as the years went on, she became more and more withdrawn, bitter, and even angry. She could not understand why God would not grant her this righteous desire.

She worked as an elementary school teacher, and being around children all day long simply reminded her that her golden ticket had never appeared. As the years passed she became more disappointed and withdrawn. People didn’t like being around her and avoided her whenever they could. She even took her frustration out on the children at school. She found herself losing her temper, and she swung between fits of anger and desperate loneliness.

The tragedy of this story is that this dear woman, in all her disappointment about her golden ticket, failed to notice the blessings shedid have. She did not have children in her home, but she was surrounded by them in her classroom. She was not blessed with a family, but the Lord had given her an opportunity few people have—the chance to influence for good the lives of hundreds of children and families as a teacher.

The lesson here is that if we spend our days waiting for fabulous roses, we could miss the beauty and wonder of the tiny forget-me-nots that are all around us.

This is not to say that we should abandon hope or temper our goals. Never stop striving for the best that is within you. Never stop hoping for all of the righteous desires of your heart. But don’t close your eyes and hearts to the simple and elegant beauties of each day’s ordinary moments that make up a rich, well-lived life.

The happiest people I know are not those who find their golden ticket; they are those who, while in pursuit of worthy goals, discover and treasure the beauty and sweetness of the everyday moments. They are the ones who, thread by daily thread, weave a tapestry of gratitude and wonder throughout their lives. These are they who are truly happy.

4 kids went to visit a pumpkin patch

in hopes of finding...

the greatest pumpkin ever!

they searched on a wagon

through funny (but sure cute) looking holes

and even in a house made up of pumpkins.

I've been wanting to add a little more

since our faith is a huge part of our little family.

So this is my solution,

to share a spiritual thought or insight

every Sunday.**

Here goes:

Last Sunday was our church's general conference.

This is where we listen to our dear prophet, 12 apostles and other leaders.

This is taken from a talk given by Ian Arden of the seventy entitled:

A Time to Prepare:

Time is never for sale; time is a commodity that cannot, try as you may, be bought at any store for any price. Yet when time is wisely used, its value is immeasurable. On any given day we are all allocated, without cost, the same number of minutes and hours to use, and we soon learn, as the familiar hymn so carefully teaches, “Time flies on wings of lightning; we cannot call it back” (“Improve the Shining Moments,” Hymns,no. 226). What time we have we must use wisely. President Brigham Young said, “We are all indebted to God for the ability to use time to advantage, and he will require of us a strict account of [its] disposition” (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Brigham Young [1997], 286).

A few weeks ago we decided to take the kids to disneyland on a Friday evening.

In my haste of getting ready, I neglected to bring the camera.

So the only picture we came away with was this one.

In California Adventure you can go to the 'animation academy'

and learn to draw just like a disney artist.

I think Andy did a pretty good job...don't you think?

No wonder they pay him the big bucks!?!

Third Day of School

go to school on the first day of school?
That's for fools.
No, we prefer to wait a couple of days...let the kids get settled into class,

then come in and get a hero's welcome.
That's how we roll.
**Truth be told, Grace was hoping and praying that the lice would just go away
and she could go to school.
Thankfully by Thursday morning she got the all-clear
and very cheerfully went to class.

By Wednesday however I was feeling pretty defeated by this pesky insect.

Nothing seemed to help.
But then I felt impressed to cut her hair.
Under normal circumstances I would never dare,
but I was one desperate momma.
Once cut, I felt that we could get this under control.

Sure enough, it seemed to do the trick.**

and if both you and your child are scratching your scalp,

I would just start checking...don't wait!

we've had much to celebrate in these parts this past week...

#1: our TEN year anniversary.
Andy had it all arranged for us to go to DLand, just the two of us.
After going a bunch of times with the kids, it was so much fun to go
without a stroller, diaper bag, cooler, etc.
He even made reservations for us at the Blue Bayou, yum!
Ya done good Andy.

#2 cheer class.
I had signed her up for an 8week class which ended last week.
Go Grace!

#3 kindergarten graduate!
On the last day of school they had a little celebration for all the
kids. So incredibly hard to believe that this school year has ended.
I get a little teary just thinking about my baby girl going on to 1st grade in a couple of months.
Dang it! They're just growing up too fast.

#4: brace face.
If you look close enough you'll notice a hot new trend
in my smile.
I'm trying to see how many people I can get to try this.
C'mon, you'll look so cool if you do!

Our day started out with a little hike to the top of
a really big hill.

Andy's work.

I love my kids.
But I would not have them without this guy's help.
Thanks to him, I was able to sleep in a bit yesterday, then eat breakfast in bed.

He is a grill master.
I request his grilling skills any chance I can get. That included yesterday.
I requested chicken. It was delicious.
He was the one to also clean up dinner and bathe the kids.
He even put them to bed.

I absolutely LOVE being a mom,
but it is great when I get a bit of break.
The best part...
he helps out year round:)

We had so many reasons to travel to Utah...

we just had to meet this little guy and be a part of his blessing

To Grace:
So far, you've made this parenting thing seem like such a breeze. You are definitely a tough act to follow. But Clark and Audrey are very lucky to have such a great example.
People you haven't seen you in a while always comment on how much older you seem. I tell them it's that darn kindergarten. It has certainly aged you. You are no longer a toddler, but a beautiful little girl.
This last valentine's day I asked you who were your friends in your class. You named everyone's name off that class list. You have this wonderful ability to make friends with anyone you meet. Just one of the things I love about you.
Thanks for being the sweetest daughter. Love you sweetie!

We've been here in LA for almost 2 years now

and this last Sunday,
we finally made it to see some cousins of Andy's.
Austin (not pictured above, but is Randall, his brother) is leaving to serve a mission in Chicago.
I guess we'll be seeing him in another 2 years.
I'm sure we'll connect with their family little more often.

But it was great to see familiar faces in our neck of the woods.

There are definitely little perks to living in SoCal.
Andy and I got to enjoy one of those this past week...
we went to a taping of The Big Bang Theory.
Of course we couldn't have done it without the help of some wonderful friends.
(this is starting to sound like an acceptance speech)

Thanks to Christa and Dan (but mostly Christa) for watching the kids
til our other friends, Cori and Greg could take them for the evening.
You guys rock!

But the whole experience was just fun.
Fun to get out and just be with Andy.
Fun to be entertained.
Fun to listen to the same jokes a few times,
but then hear a new punch line unexpectedly.
Fun to watch audience members make complete fools of themselves in between takes...
all for a little piece of candy.

This was definitely something I've always wanted to do...
I guess you could say this is now scratched off my bucket list.

Who would have thought that when I got the 'Michael Jackson Experience' on the Wii that Clark would be the one to ask to dance to it...everyday. He has become a big fan of the king of pop. In fact that is what he's doing right now. It's pretty dang cute to watch. For those of you who would like to see for themselves, well, you'll just have to come in person. I'll only charge a small admission charge:)
Some of his favorites include: Thriller, Beat It, and The Girl is Mine. We have also been listening to his songs in the car. So for the first time in my life, I'm a little 'michael-ed out'.
But it's still fun to watch a 3yr old boogie down to some michael.

6months ago yesterday I was doing this:

Yesterday, I didn't do a whole lot.
Just stayed home and enjoyed the fact that I can dance to michael jackson (more on that later) with Clark, and watch Audrey sit up on her own.

And the other day, I did this:

(watching grace get a citizenship award (way to go Grace!)while juggling two kids and not able to zoom in on time to take a decent picture)

But back to this little girl. I had a feeling we would eventually have a tall child. Both Andy and I have tall genes in our families, we both just happen to be the runts. So it's not too surprising that she's in the 50th percentile in weight and 90th for height.
Loves attention, especially from her mamma. That's what I would put in a personal ad for her. I can't believe that at this young age she will cry if someone (even her daddy) is holding her and I happen to leave the room.
She's also a belly baby. She's perfectly content on her stomach, especially now that she can roll around and scoot forward if she needs to.
And just this past week she has started to babble.
Love it.

Couldn't imagine life with out our little Audrey.

I love watching QVC.
I don't watch it for hours on-end mind you, but if the tv is on, I'll generally flip to it, just to see what they are selling. I love it even more now, since I can see it in HD. Things just look better in HD.
I feel that I am in control my spending habits, but when I see a product that could simplify my life at a great price...I just have to check it out for myself.
Today a package came with my name on it. It contained 30 white sponges claiming to clean any hard surface by simply applying warm water. So I thought I would document my first test. This was actually why I wanted these in the first place. I hate the dirt that stares at me everyday between the cracks of our kitchen counter. So I was so excited to find something that said it would get rid of it, without harsh chemicals, just water. I think they did the trick...right?

I learned (again) a life lesson yesterday.
Grace had a day off of school, so I took the kids swimming at a friend's complex. In my haste of gathering all the kids' stuff, I neglected to grab this little girl's suit. Luckily, I managed to remember a swim diaper.
Rewind to years before when it was just Grace. I remember seeing a little boy or perhaps a girl just wearing a swim diaper at a local pool. I can recall having the thought, "I can't believe someone would allow their child to run around in just a swim diaper...I would never..."

Lesson learned.

would they have two professional basketball teams. One of which is not as popular as the other (hint: not Lakers), so we thought we would take advantage and check them out in action. I wasn't sure if the kids would be into it, so I found the cheapest seats online. Turns out they loved it, Grace more than Clark. It did help that it was a good game and our team was victorious. And as an added bonus, my sister Marie and kid Brody got to join us (I don't think Brody is a fan).

So we spent part of our MLK day watching his dream being fulfilled.

Inspired

I have felt inspired this past month.

Blame it on the new year.

Blame it on not being satisfied with my norm.

But gosh darn, I have been inspired to do things.

1. Family History

I have always grimaced at this word. It has always seemed like a daunting task (still does). But if anyone knows our bishop, you'll know that he lives and breathes this stuff. He's retired and spends most his days at the family history center. Anytime he speaks, somehow he ends up on the subject. So I have been feeling like I should give it a try. I've attempted to work on it before, with not much progress or hope. But a couple of months ago, our current family history consultants (is that the correct name for their calling?) spoke in church, and they offered to come and help anyone. SO I finally made the call and just this afternoon sat down with Ingrid. She gave me a 'to do' list to start. Basically, you want to leave your kids with the necessary documents in order (i.e. birth certificates, marriage certificates, etc.). I can do that.

2. Blogging

When I get online, it's primarily to read blogs, not to shop, watch shows, or get on facebook (which is an excellent movie btw). It's my way of staying in touch with all of you out there. I just want to do it more. I always think of things to blog about, but never put forth the time to post. Well, no more!

3. Mind is drawing a blank

I guess that was about it, I can't think of what else I've been inspired to do. Must not have been very inspirational.

Christmas 2010 has come and gone, but the blog still has remained the same...til now.
Unlike the rest of the mormon community around here, we did not venture to Utah (much to our families' dismay) this year. We decided to spend some quiet, relaxing (as much as we could with 3 kids) and fun time here in sunny/rainy CA.
My favorite part of our holiday time was having Grace and Andy home for a whole week. No schedules, homework, or strict bedtimes...it was heavenly! I had a hard time getting back into our regular routine, but alas, it came regardless.

Bosom Buddies

Our week of thanksgiving (a bit behind I know) started out great with a quick (and I mean quick) visit from our dear friends Herb & Ciara. We were one of their stops on their way to AZ. As quick as it was, it was so great to see them and catch up. Grace and Sage played every single moment they had together. As they were getting ready to leave, the kids and I were also getting ready to go see another great friend of mine, Debbie, up in Fresno, CA.

Debbie and I met while our husbands were at BYU in Provo. Then we followed each other up to the great northwest. We then moved to CA within months of each other. Poor thing, she just can't get rid of me. Our trip was quick but I'm so glad I went. Fresno is only 3 hours north of us. So I'm grateful that we're not too far for a quick trip to hang out and see each other every now and then. And to make it better, our kids get along great. It also happened to be my bday while there, and Debbie was sweet enough to treat us to an hour at the zoo. I would have loved to stay a bit longer, but with all the rain, we opted to leave. And later that night her husband was kind enough to watch the kids while we went out to eat. What a guy!

This little guy has been through a lot of changes in the last couple of weeks. Besides turning 3 (happy birthday buddy!!), he has said goodbye to the binky...forever. He didn't take the news too well at first, but I think he's come to terms. He'll still ask for it, but with a little distraction, he goes on with his life.

And starting tomorrow I'll be 'missing in action' for the next 3 days getting him potty trained. I've stocked up on juice and CARS underpants, I think we're ready to roll. Wish me luck!

A week before Halloween, I was on a mission to find Clark a rescue pack and vest so that he could dress-up as Diego (I already had stuff for Grace to be Dora (her idea)). By Wednesday, I realized that we would have to come up with a different idea, cause I was striking out. Clark had mentioned that he also wanted to be Lighting McQueen. So I decided I would cut out some cardboard, spray paint it red and call it good. Andy took it upon himself to make it actually look like McQueen.

Almost a month ago, we drove our little family all the way to St. George, Utah. Why you may ask? Well, we decided it was easiest for everyone in our families to be a part of the blessing of this little girl.

When it came time to travel, I'll have to admit, I was not looking forward to traveling with 3 young kids. But thank goodness, it was a very pleasant trip. Audrey gets the prize for being the best traveler of the troop.

We decided to bless her on Saturday, right before my nephew was to be baptized (thank you again guys for letting us share your day:), since Andy and I had to get back to LA by Sunday evening to attend a friend's wedding. So it wasn't your typical blessing during a sacrament meeting. But for me, that made it all the more sweet.

It's been 8weeks since I was recovering in the hospital and getting to know this little one. I haven't had her 2month appointment yet, so I have no current stats to share. By my guess, she's probably 10lbs 8oz. She is a pro at holding up her little head and smiling back to melt any heart (especially mine:).

I'm trying to cherish every little moment with her, since this time goes by so quickly. I've heard so many people say, 'I can't remember my baby ever being this small.' I'm loving every moment. (thanks to Jamie for this oh-so-cute hat!)

Not to be over-shadowed or forgotten, this little guy has been such a trooper through all these changes in our household. He no longer takes naps (otherwise will not go to bed at a decent hour). But today, he climbed up on the couch and fell right to sleep. The best part of it all is that he went to bed at a decent hour! Now-a-days the only time he falls asleep is in the car. I can't remember the last time he has fallen asleep like this, so I couldn't resist the photo op.

I think one of Clark's favorite part of the day is picking up Grace from school. He insists on wearing his backpack when we get her. He really looks up to his older sister (btw, Grace is loving school:)

And baseball is one of his new favorite past-times. Can ya tell?

We survived our first week of all-day kindergarten (yep, that's right, 8:45am til 3:15pm, I'll get to that in a minute). We walked, well, I walked while Grace rode her scooter to her school. It took me an hour round trip, so we haven't walked again, but it was fun for the first day and perhaps every once in a while. On that first day's drop-off, I was totally expecting to cry at least a bit...but nothing (am I a heartless mom?). I was just so excited and happy for her to be in school, to start this new adventure.

And Clark has been such a trooper with this new transition. He's happy for Grace and loves to take her to and from school.

I thought I would love this all-day kindergarten (just for selfish reasons), but I decided that it's too much too early. I only get to see my little girl a few hours during the day, and she only has a few hours to play and be a kid. So much for a slow, ease into it transition. But luckily she likes school and her teacher. So far, so good.

So if you're keeping track at home, Audrey is now 5 weeks old. I just wanted to throw out a huge thank you to all those who came and helped out these last couple of weeks. I really, really appreciate it! I feel like I've been able to handle this tiny addition to our family in large part because of many helping hands. New Diet

I never thought that in a million years I would have this type of product in our fridge (no offense to those who do). I would call myself a milk fan. I'm still trying to get use to the taste. When Audrey was experiencing stomachaches, the first thing my pediatrician recommended was for me to stay off diary. And that seemed to do the trick. It hasn't been as hard as I thought. If all it takes to keep my baby free from pain is to avoid some ice cream, by all means. Boy, the things we do for these little people...

Ok I'm only doing this to appease some of you out there. I can't stand pictures of myself during the last bit of pregnancy. So here is my pregnancy bump, although I would call it more of a pregnancy balloon. I'm not one of those who gains only 20-30 lbs (the average), it's more like 50 lbs. So I have my work cut out for me once this baby comes. Speaking of which, we decided to go the C section route again (just to play it safe), and am relieved to know there is an end in sight. So I am really looking forward to this coming week...no more swollen feet and hands, having to pee every time I stand up, not being able to enjoy a meal without feeling completely full and uncomfortable. But above all, I'm looking forward to holding Audrey and experiencing a brand new baby again (and all that includes). This part will make all of this worth it. So love to all and we'll keep you posted when the big day has arrived!

We are down to the final weeks before our baby Audrey (yes this is the name, and no we have not meant to name our children after famous actors, we just happened to like those names) is born. As most of you know, the last couple of weeks of pregnancy are not only the hardest, but usually the slowest. In my case, this past week went by way too fast. My baby sister and her little boy, Brody came to visit. It was so great to have them, to have someone to hang out with each day and watch my kids play and adore their little cousin. Marie was kind enough to bring the heat from Utah, so we were constantly trying to keep cool. Going to the beach helped and on Friday we found a cool park, with a fun splash pad (this is the only time I remembered to bring the camera). Thanks again Marie and Brody for coming and helping me get through these last couple of weeks. And thanks for taking the heat back...my swollen feet thank you as well!

Green Thumb?

A few weeks ago, i took the kids (+1) to a farm. I know what you're thinking...a farm in LA? Well, not exactly. We have to drive about an hour north to get to this place. But so worth the drive! Not only do they have trains to play on, animals to feed, but they have the best strawberries (and all sorts of other produce) to pick!

and you can eat as much as you want as you go...yum!

Here at home, I planted a little garden with zucchini and carrots. After months of waiting...still no carrots, but we did get some zucchini. Don't let the size fool you, they tasted awful. I was so disappointed. I also tried my hand at a strawberry plant. That died before it could produce anything. Perhaps we'll stick to the lovely little drive to the farm.

The other night we finally took the kids to their first Dodgers game (mine as well). Please don't judge all the fun we had by the look on my face, we actually had a lot of fun. The kids really got into it (despite the lame score: Dodgers 0, Marlins 4) when they made good plays, and all the usual fun banter at games.

We left after the seventh inning, so I couldn't tell you the final score...I don't even know if they won. But we wanted to leave before the kids got too cranky and tired to ruin our ever-so-fun night out. Go Dodgers!

This year for our anniversary, we decided it was time to get a new camera. Luckily we've been up to no good, so we've been able to test it out. Earlier this week we had a little visit by one of Andy's cousins. We went to the Santa Monica Pier and played for a bit.

This was the remains of our anniversary dinner. YUM! We were thrilled to learn that we now can go to Cafe Rio anytime, instead of waiting for a trip to Utah. We were able to share our delicious meal with our good friends...who became fast fans.

book review

A couple of years ago I decided I should read a classic novel. I found a copy of Gone With The Wind at a library book sale when we lived in Portland. But I didn't start reading it until we moved here. I can't remember exactly when I began reading it, but it sure took me long enough (the sucker is a little over 1000 pages). But I'm proud to say that I finally finished it a couple of weeks ago! And then to celebrate we watched the movie (which now I love and doesn't seem very long:)
I would recommend everyone to read this book (if you haven't already). This may seem weird, but I loved how the main character was not your typical normal, good-hearted, sweet girl. She was selfish, conceited, and hateful...someone that you love to hate. But in the end you can see how she gradually changed and learned to love others, but when it came time to declare her love...she was too late. You do feel a bit sorry for her, but you get the feeling that she'll turn out ok.
Now, what next shall I read? Any suggestions?

'who's behind?...mine!'

I've really enjoyed staying caught up with everyone on their blogs that...I've forgotten to post anything on mine (my lame excuse:). While going through all the pictures the last month, I realized that we've had a really busy month of May. So busy in fact, it started before the month began (if that makes any sense).

We celebrated Andy's 31st bday at the end of April. I think we spoiled him pretty good by getting him a dvd, hoodie, LA Dodger tickets, Cinnabon cinnamon rolls, and a day at Disneyland.

Grace started taking a ballet/tap class. That girl's got rhythm!

Thanks to a very supportive husband and a good friend (thanks Christa:) I was able to make a quick trip to St. George to see my family and be there for the blessing of my new nephew. It was so short but sweet!

On that same trip I traveled up to Salt Lake to see Andy's cousin get married. Congrats to the happy couple! It was so fun to have a quick get-a-way (without kids) and spend some quality time with our extended family, but boy did I miss my little family.

Getting tired already? This is how I found Clark one day after coming home from an errand. He had fallen asleep on our way home, so in an effort to wake him up I stood him up then ran inside to take in a few items (I thought he was following me). Apparently my trick didn't work.

This past week, my friend Christa and I took the kids to see a really cool display on Noah's Ark @ the Skirball Cultural Center. All of the animals in the ark were made of recycled parts. It was pretty neat to see everyday items used to create these amazing animals.

And on Friday, to kick start our Memorial Weekend, we went to see and observe the Griffith Observatory. This place sits high above the city and near the Hollywood sign.

p.s. other fun adventures not pictured, but note-worthy: getting to see and hang-out with my older sis, Casssandra for a day. And going to Disneyland with Andy's family last weekend (more on that to follow:). So stay tuned for more exciting adventures from our part of the world.

Year One

Hard to believe (for me) that this time last year, we were unpacking our things in our new surroundings. I must admit, I wasn't too excited about our new situation. But I was extremely grateful that Andy found a good job. But over the year, this little place we call home, has definitely grown on me. For instance, being here has given us some opportunities that otherwise we would not have had. Like...

getting a new set of wheels,

flying all over the place,

and scratching the pavement with our best face forward.

I still really miss all our dear friends, but for these and other good reasons, here we'll be for at least another year. Here's to year two.

We took the kids to an easter egg hunt this last weekend. The city in which we live had several egg hunts @ different parks, which made for less people. Fabulous idea! And not only did they have the egg hunt, the easter bunny showed up (Grace's least favorite part:), a few arts & crafts, and relay races.

Later on that day Andy had his first softball game (through work). It was pretty fun to watch, and Clark was a great cheerleader for his dad. Go Andy (and team)!

From the moment we moved here, I have been playing catch-up to try and do nice things for her (on our first night here she made us a pizza and brought a bunch of paper products), but she always seems to beat me to the punch! It's because of her I was able to endure our move here. She is heaven sent!

This past week we've been partying like it's 1995. Not really, but we've had our share of fun moments. On Tuesday evening, we picked up Andy's parents @ the airport. The next morning, on Grace's bday, she wanted to open presents first thing. Can't say that I blame her.

I was contemplating on just splurging on a cake for Grace, since we weren't throwing her a party. So I went into a local bakery to inquire about one of those barbie cakes. You know which ones I'm talking about? It has an actual barbie doll surrounded by a beautiful, elegant dress made of the cake and frosting. I about died when they told me that it only cost $80! So I decided to splurge on a very well-crafted, beautifully made, homespun cake. And she was just as happy (priceless)!

Next on our agenda for fun was visiting the Natural History Museum (Grace's pick). Here are my two little statues posing (it was my favorite exhibit).

During the rest of their stay, we had grand plans-o-fun, but alas...Grace's cough turned into a fever, which we are still battling. So we spent a lot of quality time at home, watching movies and playing the wii.

side note: before Grace got sick, Kathy and I got to go to a taping of the Ellen show (sorry no pics). It was so fun to be able to spend the day with her w/o little interruptions (thanks to Dan). And I swear I burned 500 calories just from all the dancing (before the show, during commercial breaks, and after). If anyone caught Friday's show w/ Jimmy Kimmel we were the ones in the very last row in the top right corner. Did you see us?

Let the festivities begin

Grace will be turning 5 this coming week. Instead of a big party, we decided to keep things small and simple this year. She really wanted to go bowling...again. I'm not sure if this is going to be a tradition with her, but we were happy to oblige. This is actually the first time going bowling here in CA.

Grace chose to have her good friend Selah join us. Good choice Grace! These two are 2 years apart, but you would never know it (well, except for the height difference). They get along so well!

Clark got to try his hand at it. He's got great potential. Go Clark!

That's the word I would use to describe this boy. He cannot (or I should say 'does not') go to bed without these three items: his binky, monkey, and blanket. So when we have tried (unsuccessfully) to lose the binky, people will ask, 'so he doesn't have anything else to soothe him?'. Yes, he does. Not that I'm complaining, I think it's rather cute that when I see him first thing in the morning, he's armed. And something else he is attached to is the tiny tag on the blanket. If you squint really hard, you will see that in the photo he is actually playing with it. But the thing is so small, most of the time I have a hard time finding the darn thing (especially in the dark!). As soon as I hand him the blanket, he's asking for the tag. There's more. He's also very attached to his cars. We got him some of the cars from "Cars" for Christmas, and he hasn't been without. The boy cannot go anywhere without his Lightning McQueen, Chick Hicks, and Mister the King. I'm sure other mother's with boys can relate. And he is constantly playing with them. Anywhere there is a flat surface, about his height, you will find him playing with his cars.
Hopefully in a few years I won't be complaining about having to pull him away from all his favorites just to go to school...wish me luck!

Kindergarten

Over the past couple of weeks, I've begun the kindergarten registration process. It's hard to believe my little girl is already at that stage in life. I didn't realize that I would be signing my life away just to sign Grace up for school, but I guess it comes with the territory. It's a small price to pay for my child's education. The one part that I truly did not anticipate being the most difficult of all, was the doctor's visit.
The visit itself was actually a great experience. For the first couple of years in her life, anytime we had to go to the doctor's Grace would scream, and that was just when they had to measure her head. So now, to have her be a willing participant, was quite pleasant. Even better was when Clark wanted it to be 'his turn'. Which was great since I had also scheduled his 2 year appointment.
Everything was going great until the first poke came for Grace. They had to get a bit of blood, and it all went down hill from there. Even right before that part she seemed happy to be getting shots, just because she knew she would be getting a sucker after wards. But all that bravery went out the window once that first prick was pricked. Can't really blame her, I'm a wimp when it comes to that stuff. So to see my little girl scream and shriek in shear pain and terror, it was a little more than I could handle. I found myself crying right along with her. The nurse could see that I was having a difficult time and asked if I needed a moment. I just didn't anticipate how much she would hate it. I had a vision of how it would be: that she would say how much it hurt, but that she would be brave...this was in-between each shot. Not so.
I'm just grateful it's over! Now life should just get easier from here on out, right?

All last week it rained and rained and rained some more. I almost forgot what it was like to live amongst so much moisture. I tried to capture just how much it was raining, but with a not-so-state-of-the-art camera, it doesn't do it justice (do you just love our view of the 90?). But after a few days of it, I began to realize just how much I've grown accustomed to the sun. I really missed it! And couldn't wait for it to come back. There were also a few things I learned about myself while stuck inside: I'm not very good at coming up with creative projects for my kids to do (any ideas would be welcome); getting up at 5:30am to work-out and being pregnant do not mix well with me (sorry Christa!); I really enjoy having a front yard that my kids could go out and enjoy; I love not having to wear socks with my shoes; and I really, really enjoy nice weather!
(disclaimer: this in no way lessens my love of Portland. I still miss it and everyone in it.)

So what to do while it pours? Cheap entertainment of course!

I'm very sad to report...that Clark has started to refuse naps. He may nap 1 or 2 times during the week, but that is about it. After much frustration, I've come to grips with this new phase. I was anticipating him napping for at least another year (especially since Grace napped until she was 4!). But alas, he is definitely not like his sister. The hardest part of it all is that between the hours of 3pm til bed time (7pm) he is VERY cranky. So until his little body adjusts to this, we'll all just have to endure and enjoy our ever-growing little guy.

playing catch up

I have been meaning to post about our christmas vacation (not restful one bit:) to utah. But this last week, i've been dealing with 3 sick people (very good excuse, i think). But now that they are getting all better, I have no excuse! And since our batteries died one day into our little trip and never replaced them, our pictures are few...but proof, that we were there.
Some of the highlights were: meeting my new nephew (3 months) Brody, and new niece (1 month) Hadley. So adorable. Seeing the rest of the family. Catching up with good friends. Eating way too much. Staying up way too late. Announcing baby #3. Working-out with my sisters. Going to see the lights on Temple Square. Freezing our butts off!

We wanted to have our own little christmas here at home. So we didn't leave for Utah til christmas day around 10:30am. We arrived in Salt Lake after 10pm. The kids did great (thank heavens for portable dvd players!), the traffic wasn't bad, and the weather was perfect!

Oh Christmas Tree

Here is our ever-so lovely Christmas tree. It's kind of fun now to see just how many ornaments we've accumulated over the years. In the first couple of years, all we had were Andy's ornaments (star wars and star trek). But now, we have a lot more normal looking (no offense) ones.

On a random note:

In a recent grocery shopping trip, Clark started striking this pose...and luckily I had the camera. I have no idea where he got this from, but it cracks me up every time.

Every day right before nap time, Clark and I look for his binky, blanket, and monkey. But yesterday, we could not find the binky. Believe me, I looked everywhere for that thing, but with no luck. So I explained to him that he'll just have to go without, cause that's what 'big boys' do. I sang him a few songs and left the room. I was quite pleased with how easily he settled down. About a half hour after he went to bed (or so I thought) I heard his little voice. Much to my shock, he was up and about...hanging out in the bathroom sink...wanting to brush his teeth. I have to admit, I was more amused than upset (hence the picture). Luckily, he did not turn the water on. Needless to say, he did not get a nap.

Later that night, I paid the price for Clark's lack of sleep at Grace's ballet class performance. But he really enjoyed watching his big sister perform. And so did I! I was a proud mama!

thanksgiving weekend

We stayed around town during the thanksgiving holiday (much to our families' dismay) and tried to see some of the sights. Last stop was the Getty Museum. The coolest part of it all is the view (of smoggy LA), and the art is nice to look at to. It sits a top a large hill and in order to get to it you have to park below then take a tram up. We definitely want to go back someday.

Earlier in the day we went to the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The area sure isn't as glamorous as you might think. Right outside of the Kodak Theater there tons of panhandlers dressed up as different characters. We didn't get our pictures taken with them...they kind of scare me.

And last but not least, we shared our thanksgiving table with Chris (a friend from Andy's work) and his mother and girlfriend. This was our third turkey day on our own, and I think it gets better every year. I wish I took a picture of the bird, it was beautiful and most delicious.

Birth Day

This year for my 32nd annual birthday I wanted to do something fun. So we joined the rest of the world and went to Disneyland. We were lucky enough to go with a couple of friends. Despite the crowds it was fun and the weather was perfect!

Grace got brave and had her picture taken with some fairies. This may seem like no big deal to some, but Grace has never wanted her picture taken with any of the characters cause they scare her. I was a proud mama!

We got home in time for dinner and some mint chocolate chip ice cream (yum, my favorite- thanks Chad).

and the BEST part of my day is being sung to by my little family.

I've known for a long time that when it comes to eating, Grace and Clark couldn't be more opposite. So today when I was getting their lunch ready, it struck me that
this is a classic example. I usually will ask Grace what she wants (only for lunch mind you). Today she asked for a hot dog with a bun, but without the hot dog. While Clark will only eat the hot dog plain. Silly kids! Before having them, I never realized just how picky and opinionated kids could be about food. Who knew!?!

Blog Worthy

My parents made the trek all the way to So Cal last weekend. It was short, but sweet. The time was filled with candy, a small b-day party, the beach, swimming, etc. So thanks for a wonderful time, you guys definitely made it blog worthy!

So here are my little trick-o-treaters. So who says that if you're born on Halloween, you actually have to like to dress up? For some reason, Clark refused to wear his Peter Pan costume (luckily no money was wasted). He was almost in tears just looking at the thing. Better luck next year!

I hear this expression a lot. Grace is always wanting to surprise me. The other day while I was doing the dishes, she was up to some good (little did I know). Luckily she documented (with pics) the whole thing.

there lived a little ballerina who danced and danced all day long (Mondays mostly). Before she knew it, class was over.

As were her swimming lessons.

Her little brother even tried to get a piece of the water action any chance he could get.

But alas, she found other ways to fill up her days. Like hang-out with her #1 fans.

And her little brother also found things to do in his spare time, like play football with his dad.

The next leg of our little trip (read previous post first) was spent with my family at bear lake. It was a slow start, but we eventually made it to the lake. Our plans were changed a bit when we woke up to rain on the one day we were going to be on the lake. Snap. Thankfully, we had my brother-in-law to the rescue with his 4 wheelers. So fun! The sun did finally come out on Sunday, so we took advantage of what time remained and the kids actually got to play in the water. Not all of my family could join us, we sure missed ya (you know who you are:), but we enjoyed ourselves with those who could make it. Time was too short, but I enjoyed every moment!

Grammy and Kay on the way down the mountain

I'm not ashamed to admit that it's been almost a month since i took the kids to utah and i am now just posting about it. I do, however feel awful about not taking a moment to see friends while there. Please know that i still love you all and will definitely see ya the next time we're in town. So this little trip was all about the family vacations and spending quality time with everyone. Our first stop: snowbird. It's one of my favorite places to go every year. One of my favorite things to do there is ride the tram up to the top of the summit, then take a chair lift down (pictured above). I love it!

Seconds

We've had a few events in our family these last couple of weeks that we'll call 'seconds' (not to be confused with a previous post entitled, 'firsts'). Our first second was the recent visit of my sister Cassandra. This was the second time she has come to visit us since we left Utah. And she came to visit the second child of the family (me). We got to spend some real quality time, catching up, eating, shopping, etc. She's a lot of fun to have around, and so helpful! Come back soon CJ, we miss you already!

Grace is the second best in her first-ever ballet class. She isn't the most coordinated of the group, but she sure gets an A+ for trying.

Dear Marie,

Hard to believe your time with us has already come and gone. But while you were here, I sure enjoyed having you around! I'm sad to say that this is the only picture taken. I'm just glad I got it, since my batteries died right after. It was so fun to just hang out, run our errands, get burned at the beach, shop and search high and low for some frozen yogurt! I thought it would be great to get back to my usual daily routine, but I sure miss your company. I think I'm going through Marie withdraws. I still can't get Clark to say your name, only 'CJ'. Sorry 'bout that. And Grace is wondering when you'll return. But seeing how your 25 weeks pregnant, I don't see it happening in the next little while. We'll just have to come visit you in your neck of the woods and meet little Brody. Please take care and get some sleep! Love ya sis!

happy flag day

like many of you, our flag day (did you even realize?) was pretty uneventful. we did get to deal with a feverish child (grace) and a very loud, tired, cranky, teething little guy. our taco dinner turned out great, but was spent mainly in the bathroom, hosing down clark after a nasty diaper (the kid has impeccable timing!). we hardly had time to enjoy the day together. however, 8 years ago our day was much different. it wasn't about the kids. the day was spent surrounded by those we love all there to wish us congrats and best of luck. little did we realize all the joys (emphasis on the JOYS) and difficulties that would follow. but looking back, i wouldn't trade any of it. especially the man i love!

grace learned a little lesson in physics the other day, which is: if you push something (like a large wooden swing), that object will come back with greater or equal force and if you don't get out of the way, that object will get ya. i'm sorry sweetie you had to learn the hard way!
